The NEW largest Park in Atlanta

by H-pack on April 10, 2012

So Piedmont park better watch out, because since the 2006 purchase of the Bellwood Quarry and the 100 acres that surround it, the spot for Atlanta’s most prestigious park may be threatened.

In 2006, the city purchased the quarry from Vulcan Materials although the quarry wasn’t originally for sale! The quarry and surrounding area will become part of the BeltLine! We all know how highly I think of the BeltLine!

So, this 10 year plan will develop the 300+ park located on the Northwest side of the city, near Northside Road. Overshadowing Piedmont’s 180 acre stretch!

One very exciting part of this purchase is that the Watershed Management Department owns it and it will provide a 30-day water supply for the city. I’m sure the Mayor is pumped about this addition to the city’s sustainability.

Here’s what Mayor Shirley Franklin had to say about the impressive purchase back in 2006: “The development of the Westside park is the most exciting news about new greenspace to occur in metro Atlanta in years,” said Mayor Shirley Franklin. “This is another clear sign of momentum for the overall BeltLine initiative, which continues to make major strides toward early implementation.”

Wait! Did she say greenspace?! Yeah, she did!

So here’s some pics from my recent quary adventure. As always, I encourage you to go experience the beauty yourself; it is breath taking.

Also, if you have the time to take the FREE BeltLine tour, you will have the privilege of seeing the quarry yourself and learning everything you want to know!

You can read the full draft of the purchase here.

So here’s some pics of my adventure:

Beautiful

Yes, I usually look this crazy. It's The BeltLine for goodness sake!
